I'm curious... when will the next videocache update come out? When it does, do we have to buy it for $20, or are updates free?

There is no fixed timeline for next major/minor updates. But minor updates (1.9.*) are free while if there is a major change which cause version to go to 2.* or something, it'll be paid. Cost will be notified.
