Dont want HD video to be cached

by raytaylor on 15 May 2011

It seems that even though users are only streaming 360p versions of youtube video, once the threshold is hit, the 720p or 1080p version is downloaded.

Hi, I have installed video cache and it appears to be working well but there is one issue i need to solve.

Most of my customers have only got 512k broadband connections. When they view an uncached video on youtube, they select the 240p or 360p resolution and it streams perfectly well. But when that video is triggered for caching, the videocache downloads the HD 720p or 1080p version - whichever is higher.

This is an issue because any later views or cache hits for the video, will mean that the user is forced to view the HD version which will not stream over their 512kbit connection to my office very well. It means the video is slower at buffering than ever before. If they select a low quality setting, they are still being forced to watch the HD version of the video from the cache.

Is there a way where I can set the maximum quality level to be cached for youtube video? I dont want any HD high definition 720p or 1080p youtube videos to be cached.
I thought about setting the maximum video size to 50mB but that might work ok for music videos that are less than 5 minutes long, but wont work for videos that are 15 or 20 minutes long, even if they are at the lower resolution.

Please get back to me urgently because i might be having to disable video cache if my users cannot view cached video on their 512k broadband connection.

Thanks
